However, there is little empirical evidence on the impact of school-based kindergarten transition practices on children’s academic performance. The present study investigates the effect of transition practices on academic achievement.
A sample of kindergarten teachers was interviewed about the transition practices they used in the fall of 1998. They reported on the school days they shortened at the beginning of the school year, and they identified teachers who visited students’ homes. These practices are designed to increase parent-initiated involvement in the school. These practices are thought to have a positive effect on children’s academic achievement.
Among the teachers, the average teacher had 3.1 years of experience teaching Grade 1-Grade 5. Only six percent of teachers had more than 20 years of experience. Nine percent of teachers were women. Only two percent were Asian or Native American.
The study used data from the first two waves of the ECLS-K data collection. The assessments were administered in one-on-one settings with computer-assisted interviewing technology.
